"I have little stomach for the political activism that is often appended to the faith and in general find myself increasingly at odds with the things I hear coming from the faith community"
And yet, Christianity is intrinsically and essentially political at its core. Matters of legitimacy, power and the trappings of government are the the ending themes of the prayer which concludes "for Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever"
And "a gospel" is a particular form of proclamation about the birth or accession of royalty. That is why the writers of the 4 Christian gospels used that term: Jesus the King has been born and has ascended to rule at the right hand of the Father now and has promised to return to rule this earth. There is more to be said about this by NT Wright or by Yoder in "The Politics of Jesus".
Frustratingly, there are few Christians implementing that outlook and instead are captive of either the right or the left -- well expressed by Jim Wallis's book about
God's Politics -- Why the Right Gets It Wrong and the Left Doesn't Get It.
