"Things that I once viewed with strong conviction and animated passion no longer move me; it seems that by necessity, such things keep being pruned and pared away until I am left with only the most skeletal framework of faith."
The way I have explained this to myself and on occasion to others is "I don't know as much as I used to, but what I do know I know a whole lot better." It seems that too much of doctrinal/theological work has been oriented towards the perimeter and relatively less toward the core.
