In exploring my own thoughts more deeply, I have come to the conclusion that much of my faith struggles have very little to do with doctrine. Rather, my life is very busy these days and I often fail to surrender the myriad cares and concerns—the thousand-and-one little details and deadlines—over to God, renewing my strength in Him. This tends to have a cumulative effect, for a few days of not surrendering and I am so care worn and caught up that I become a hollow, burned-out shell. Failing to surrender today so often sets up a vicious spiral tomorrow and before long I am worn out, my frazzled nerves and constant anxiety the single greatest enemy to my faith. So you see, it feeds itself: the symptom feeds the root cause and the root cause further manifests the symptom. It is only by a daily—and intentional—communion with God that we can expect to have any sanity, and only sane people can see reality clearly. We might call those who are touched mad geniuses who see sliver or reality with amazing clarity, but at what price? Their genius lacks balance and seems amazing to us, for it is now being viewed through a more settled lens. If I spend all my time, for example, paranoid that a spider might crawl up on to my bed while I am asleep, you may soon see one of the most gifted men the world has ever known in terms of effective pest control solutions. That man will be a genius, yes, but balanced? No. It is his obsession that drives him, not his clarity of vision. He is an expert on molehills only because he has magnified them into mountains, not because he truly sees with any greater clarity than the rest of us. Thus, I repeat again: It is only by a daily—and intentional—communion with God that we can expect to have any sanity, and only sane people can see reality clearly.
