Hello Dale,

Any type of addiction is a symptom for some underlying issue; in fact, temptation usually strikes when we are HALT: hungry, angry, lonely, or tired. Chat lines are the sort of addiction that forms when we are feeling lonely and our needs for belonging and intimacy are not being met. A large step in the right direction is replacing that time with more constructive habits. If chat lines are a problem, getting a Xanga account might not be a good solution for it is still potentially tying you to a computer for long hours when you are seeking a deeper level of fulfilment. Rather, something as simple and yet as radical as volunteering some time at a local charity or doing something in which you feel like your talents are not only needed but appreciated can go a very long way. Our hunger for validation and acceptance is often best remedied by being a blessing to others. And being a blessing to others is often an intentional thing: we give of our time but we reap a renewed sense of purpose and meaning. Focusing on ourselves and trying to fix the solution often only leads to depression; at the very least, taking a walk in the park or pursuing a hobby (like learning to play guitar or even reading an engaging novel) can take our minds off ourselves and give us a sense of accomplishment. There are lots of things for you to do with your time if you will just apply some of that mental energy that is currently being focused on how helplessly trapped you feel into more creative avenues. There is nothing earth-shattering in what I've said, but perhaps it will give you some ideas that will help you over the hump and on to healthier habits.

God bless,
Eric
