I think I've said this before, but it seems to me that "Religion" is the only field of inquiry that has not been permitted to evolve from its original roots.
Scientists, mathematicians and philosophers, for example, never hesitate to question the assumptions of their parents and teachers. It is presumed that they will and should do so. Sometimes they refute the knowledge they inherit, but most of the time they either build upon it, expand it, or incorporate it into something new.
Why shouldn't Christians do the same? Shouldn't we...(like Eric)...have the courage to examine all aspects of Christianity and try to sort out which "truths" are eternal and which "truths" are contingent? Shouldn't mankind's understanding of God and the Universe mature as our knowledge of the world broadens and deepens? Doesn't that make sense? And isn't it wonderful and exciting as well? Why fear it? If God is real, He will help us. I'm sure He doesn't expect us to retain a tribal mentality forever.
