I keep thinking about "infinite upon infinite" in regard to sin.
That Jonathan Edwards seems like a pretty gloomy guy. He lived in the time of burning witches...right? Doesn't surprise me. I'm not fond of ministers who try to scare people into faith. So much better to "inspire"...no?
"Infinite upon infinite" sounds like a description of God, not sin. Sin is usually so...banal. Evil people are rather boring I think, while saints are quite fascinating and creative. Don't get me wrong... sin can be HORRIBLE, but evil derives it's horror and its tragedy from our power to love. Seems so much better to focus on that power rather than the other.
I prefer to think of myself as "made in God's image" and try to live up to that ideal rather than focus on my own and other's depravity and corruption. There's a quote from someone that says "Every man becomes the image of the God he adores." Another says "Love virtue and vice will be destroyed."
Seems like a healthier way to deal with sin. There's less danger of becoming cynical and judgmental.
BTW Susan I went to your blog and I am impressed with you. When I was your age I was playing drinking games and worrying about having and not having sex. Never thought about ANYTHING infinite upon infinite!!!
