Which only goes to show the ignorance of the world, that they actually reason to themselves that they are not only smarter than this God who in their estimation doesn't exist (but if He did, they would be infinitely smarter), but can run the world a whole lot better than He could.

It says something about the line of thinking that demands to know of God why He hasn't made their lives better when they've done so much "for Him," or why He lets suffering and evil go on in the world, as though the fall of Adam and all the fallout of that was His will, and we had nothing at all to do with it.

So, yes, we not only want to ignore the plight of others and live for ourselves, but we deflect the blame from ourselves to God in the bargain.
