Diana,
Well, it seems like I may have been a little bit premature in my conclusions. :) I have been reading more of
The Pentateuch and Haftorahs and posted a new entry on the blog you might find interesting entitled
More on Orthodox Judaism. It is a verse-by-verse commentary of the relevant passages in Genesis: the ones we would be most curious about hearing when asking about the Orthodox Jewish perspective on mortality. Part of my initial confusion may have stemmed from that the fact that, as Rabbi Harold Schulweis writes in
Afterlife: What Happens After I Die?, “the afterlife does not function as a major Jewish belief among modern Jews.” That does not necessarily mean that there is no Jewish belief in an afterlife, merely that unlike Christians “where inquiries about the Jewish view of life after death are almost invariably the first questions posed,” Jews are much more focused on the here and live, manifesting God’s glory in the present. Anyway, thanks for posting.
God bless,
Eric
