"But the self does not die easily!"
But if the self could only learn to detach itself from the false ego it often confuses with its true self, it would find its greatest fulfillment in its spiritual consummation with Christ, for then it will again find itself: its true self. This is the paradox of surrender: you must die to live: an experiential, existential reality like unto none previously dreamt of or imagined. Perhaps it was best explained when someone said (Lewis, I believe) that surrendering yourself to God is what you would wish for if you only knew what you wanted. And when we do surrender, we find not only the peace from release, but the thing we would wish for if only we knew what we wanted.
