Without having read the article, I can say with relative surety that MOST of the people you'd least expect to be spiritual are very much so. This includes music. For several reasons...mostly, I'm guessing because their record companies would be horrified at the thought of a heavy metal group talking about their spirituality, unless, amusingly enough, it has red horns and a pitchfork.

Certainly, though, Aerosmith is at a height of popularity and can, at this point, say virtually ANYTHING without effecting their social status. Not only that, they have been extremely UNhedonistic since the mid 80s

Consider the case of U2, one of my all time favorites and the band VH-1 said was "unabashedly Christian when it wasn't cool." They've been writing music with incredibly strong religious imagery for 2 decades. They may very well be the most popular band in the world and even a heathen like me is a huge fan.

Springsteen has also been talking about and writing music deeply rooted in his Catholic upbringing and quite often speaks of religious themes in concert.

There IS one portion of the article that made me chuckle:

"We need to go back to the way it was 30 years ago, when everybody had Grandma and Grandpa, and we were willing to pass moral judgments about right and wrong,” said Steven Tyler, 53, the lead singer of the famously hedonistic rock band Aerosmith.

Gee, Steve...bet you weren't thinking like that in 1975, huh? But you had YOUR fun, so judgement is fine now, huh? How would "Love in an Elevator" measure up to that judgement?
