Note from Beneath the Avalanche

May 5, 2005

Hello everyone,

I knew my week felt like it was going entirely too smooth. Of course, I knew that this is the last week of classes and that next week brings the dreaded finals. I knew that taking my life easy and trying my hand at a fair bit of blogging wasn’t going to last forever, but I wasn’t quite prepared for just how “unforever”! Tuesday morning, I became vaguely aware that I had more paper deadlines due than the time I had loosely budgeted and that if I was going to study, I had best get started; by Wednesday it was apparent I was in over my head. Late Wednesday afternoon, it was brought to my attention that this was the week a newsletter was due—somehow, I had it in my mind all along that the newsletter was not due until the following week. Nevertheless, I dutifully set about typing a newsletter, putting aside my impending studies, hoping at least to get it sent by late this afternoon (Thursday). Alas, three pages and many hours later, I simply see no way of finishing and staying ahead with my studies as well.

Archive note: See also the discussion forum thread regarding this newsletter.

Briefly, if you have not yet been by the new blog, you might be interested in checking it out: just go to fishtree—that’s me. :) In fact, finals won’t last forever, and if you don’t already have an account, you might be interesting in signing up for a blog of your own; a classic account is free and allows you to interact with thousands of others (including yours truly, of course). Do be forewarned, however: the chances of getting your first pick of user names is rather slim. In any case, I was sitting astride the mountainside enjoying the beautiful view on Monday and now, three days later, I’m picking myself up from the tangle at the bottom where the unexpected avalanche deposited me. It occurred to me that under such circumstances, any sensible person would send a note very much like this one to his longsuffering readers, humbly asking their pardon, and then, wasting no time, proceed to roll up his sleeves and plunge headfirst into the inevitable. So then, I will sign off for now, and, Lord willing and I survive my finals, a regular issue of Le Penseur Réfléchit will land in your inbox May 18. Thank you again for your understanding and I pray that you all have a blessed next two weeks. Finally, any and all prayers are coveted during this busy season of my life; the stress level is much higher than the tone of this note might seem to imply.

God bless,
Eric
