The Necessary Other

February 4, 2002

Hello everyone,

Today’s newsletter comes from Kathleen Norris’ book The Cloister Walk and addresses the feeling of “otherness” in our world, in particular highlighting the artistic temperament. I noted in Meet Madeleine L’Engle that even as a child I used to inform Mom and Dad that “I had different eyes,” then went on to aver that “I knew what I was talking about then and still do.” I can’t help but recall those statements with a certain irony as I read Kathleen’s words.

You may not be a person with a strong artistic temperament, but I would venture to guess that you have struggled with feelings of being different, of being misfit, of somehow not quite fitting in, of being forced to hide your “true self” or “deeper self” for fear of rejection. In this regard, I think you will see that you have much in common with this memoir with the added boon that you can perhaps understand those who do have strong artistic inclinations a little better. Beyond this, I will refrain from further commentary, and let Norris speak in her own poetic voice of “the necessary other.”

God bless,
Eric
