The Ghost of Charles Dickens

December 28, 2001

Hello everyone,

In Christmas Origins, I wrote of the importance of A Christmas Carol in shaping Christmas as we know it and spoke of how it was a family tradition of ours to read it each year-end. Many of you have seen it a thousand times in its many movie and cartoon versions with “Dear Ol’ Ebeneezer Scrooge,” but have you ever read the book? If not, it is unlikely you have ever experienced Dickens.

This article, “The Ghost of Christmas Past: Charles Dickens’s Triumph,” answers Dickens’s more caustic critics and bears out the sheer, insane beauty of his use of words. The article was written by J. Bottum, the Book & Arts section editor of The Weekly Standard, and appears in the December 24, 2001 issue, starting on page 29. I think you will enjoy reading this fast-paced account of one of literati’s finest. You can love him, hate him, call him every name in the book . . . but you can’t ignore him. Charles Dickens is here to stay.

God bless,
Eric
